It’s hard to describe my excitement for this episode. Poe Ballantine has been a writer I have loved since his first book, Things I Love About America. Though he is often compared to Bukowski and Kerouac I find him warmer, self effacing and human. His writing grabs you and often you have no choice but to put down his book so you can ponder a line or thought.
I am such a fan I was terrified to converse with him. However, like his writing Mr. Ballantine’s warmth quickly put me at ease. He shares some stories of his thirty something years as a drifter, how writers like he are threats to the publishing establishment and his insights on what it means for a writer to get their due.
Poe is has a unique mind and take on existence. I thought about this conversation for days after it ended. Frankly, I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend and hour talking with Mr. Ballantine. He’s one amazing fucking guy.
If you haven’t read his books do your self a huge favor and go to Hawthorne Books and buy all of them. You won’t be disappointed.
